The August Roof Checklist: Catching Small Issues Before Spokane’s Autumn Rains

As August winds down in the Inland Northwest, Spokane homeowners know that cooler weather and autumn rains are just around the corner. While late summer is perfect for enjoying outdoor events and lingering warm evenings, it is also the single best time of year to prepare your home’s first line of defense: your roof.

After months of exposure to high UV radiation and 90°+ temperatures, your asphalt shingles have expanded, contracted, and baked. Catching minor wear and tear now prevents emergency leaks when October downpours roll in.

During a roof inspection, we check the chimney flashing to ensure it will keep water out of your home.

Here is your essential late-summer roof checklist to ensure your home is fully protected.

1. Inspect Your Ridge Cap Shingles

Ridge cap shingles run along the top peaks of your roof line. Because they sit at the highest point of your house, they take the brunt of direct solar radiation and wind exposure during summer storms.

  • What to look for: Look for cracking along the seams, lifted edges, or missing pieces. Damaged ridge caps allow rainwater to flow directly into your attic space.

2. Check Pipe Boots and Flashing Seals

The rubber boots surrounding your roof vents and the metal flashing around your chimney are sealed with specialized caulking. Extreme summer heat dries out this sealant, causing it to shrink, crack, or pull away.

  • What to look for: Gaps between metal flashing and brick chimneys, or cracked, brittle rubber gaskets around pipe vents. Re-sealing these areas in August takes minutes and prevents costly ceiling stains later.

3. Clear Early Leaf & Pine Needle Accumulation

Ponderosa pines and deciduous trees across Spokane start dropping debris late in the summer. When pine needles pile up in roof valleys (the V-shaped channels where two roof slopes meet), they trap moisture against your shingles.

  • What to look for: Dark lines of needles or debris along roof valleys and behind chimneys. Clearing these channels ensures rainwater drains smoothly off your roof deck.

Safety First: Never walk on a steep or high roof without proper safety equipment. A perimeter check with a pair of binoculars from the ground is usually all you need to spot obvious warning signs.

Schedule Your Pre-Fall Evaluation

If you notice damaged shingles or cracked seals during your walkaround, don't wait until the first heavy rainstorm to take action.
